Speech of Vice President Dr. Shina Ansari, Head of Iran's Department of Environment, at the COP30 meeting in Belém, Brazil/Head of the Department of Environment: Iran is committed to its climate obligations despite sanctions.

Dr. Shina Ansari, the Vice President and Head of the Department of Environment of the Islamic Republic of Iran, presented a report on Iran's environmental achievements and challenges at the 30th session of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) held in Belém, Brazil, emphasizing the necessity of collective and fair action to combat the climate crisis.

According to the Public Relations of the Department of Environment, Dr. Ansari began her speech by thanking the government and people of Brazil for hosting the global meeting, stating: "This gathering is a valuable opportunity for countries to pave the way for addressing environmental challenges by adopting realistic and fair decisions."

The Head of the Department of Environment, referring to the commitment of member countries of the Climate Change Convention to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and move towards renewable energies, said: "The Islamic Republic of Iran, despite the unilateral limitations and sanctions that have hindered access to technology, financial resources, and foreign investment, has achieved significant progress in the field of clean energy and pollution reduction."

She added: "Last year, Iran's solar energy capacity increased by 75 percent, wind power generation has expanded, and the peaceful nuclear energy development program has been strengthened. Furthermore, by managing gas flares in oil and gas fields, a reduction of more than 10 billion cubic meters in greenhouse gas emissions has been achieved, and a program to reduce another 12 billion cubic meters over the next four years is underway."

The Vice President, referring to fuel transition projects and energy efficiency plans, considered these actions as a sign of Iran's firm commitment to environmental protection and said: "Despite prolonged droughts, an increase in the country's average temperature by 1.8 degrees Celsius, and a 50-millimeter decrease in precipitation over the past five decades, Iran is still determined to continue the path of sustainability and fulfill its commitments."

In another part of her speech, she referred to the environmental consequences of the recent military aggression by the United States and the Zionist regime against the Islamic Republic of Iran, stating: "This illegal action, in addition to being a clear violation of international law and an example of a war crime, has also caused extensive environmental destruction, including the emission of more than 50,000 tons of greenhouse gas in Tehran. Attacks on Iran's peaceful nuclear facilities could have caused one of the world's largest environmental catastrophes."

She also referred to the "environmental and human crimes of the Zionist regime in Gaza," adding: "These crimes, which have led to the killing of civilians and the destruction of vital infrastructure, have also resulted in profound environmental damage."

The Head of the Department of Environment concluded by emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in combating climate change, saying: "Iran is ready to share its local knowledge and experiences with other countries and to have constructive cooperation with the international community in achieving shared environmental goals. We are the inheritors of one earth and one destiny and must act with respect and justice to leave a sustainable legacy for future generations."
